About the producer:
This coffee is produced by Kefalech Tariku in Chelchelie, in Ethiopia’s Gedeb district. She manages a small high-altitude farm where traditional Ethiopian heirloom varieties are grown. The coffee comes from a single producer, which gives this lot a clear connection to one farm and one growing environment.
About the region: Gedeb, Gedeo
Gedeb lies in the Gedeo zone of southern Ethiopia, one of the country’s best-known highland coffee-growing areas. Coffee here is grown at very high elevations, where cooler temperatures slow the maturation of the coffee cherries and give them more time to develop sugars and complex aromatics.
Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of Arabica coffee and is known for its extraordinary diversity of coffee varieties. Many local varieties are grouped under the broad term “Ethiopian heirloom”, although this includes numerous distinct local types. Smallholder farming remains central to Ethiopian coffee production, and farms are often very small compared with plantations in many other coffee-growing countries.
Kefalech’s coffee is a strong expression of this tradition: a small farm, local varieties, high-altitude growing conditions and natural processing come together to create a cup that is aromatic, sweet and distinctly Ethiopian.
