When coffee first came to Costa Rica is the subject of some debate, but it’s likely coffee arrived from the Johnny Appleseed of coffee, the Caribbean islands, the most productive coffee region in the world in the late 18th and early 19th century. By 1850 almost all Costa Rican coffee was being shipped to London through an exclusive arrangement with a single shipping company, which brought back advanced technologies of the time, one of the reasons Costa Rica was an early adopter of advances, both mechanical and agricultural, in coffee production.
Story of Coffee
Nestled in the high-altitude region of Tarrazú, Costa Rica, Finca Monte Alto stands as a beacon of excellence in coffee cultivation. Operated by Gerardo and Jennifer Arias, this family-owned farm has been dedicated to producing, processing, and marketing some of Costa Rica’s finest coffees since its establishment in 2013. The farm’s commitment to quality and sustainable practices has earned it recognition among specialty coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
Finca Monte Alto specializes in the cultivation of Red Catuai, a variety celebrated for its balanced sweetness and vibrant acidity. This lot is processed using the natural or dry method, where the cherries are carefully hand-picked, floated to ensure only the densest and ripest are used, and then dried on raised beds. This meticulous process, which takes around 30 days, enhances the coffee’s natural fruity and sweet notes.
Gerardo and Jennifer Arias bring over 30 years of experience in specialty coffee production. Their dedication to fair and ethical trade ensures that Finca Monte Alto not only produces exceptional coffee but also contributes positively to the community and environment. From micro lots to diverse processing methods such as honey and anaerobic, their expertise is evident in every cup.
